キリンチャレンジカップ2006 - 日本対ブルガリア
5月9日にキリンチャレンジカップ2006が開幕し、日本代表は大阪の長居スタジアムでブルガリア代表と対戦した。国内組中心のメンバーで臨んだ日本はホームの利を生かし終始攻勢に出るがなかなか得点を奪えず、開始早々の失点と終了間際の失点により1-2で敗れている。2008年欧州選手権予選を控えるブルガリア（2006年W杯本大会には不出場）は万全のコンディションとはいえないまでも、要所要所では鋭い攻撃を仕掛けた。
今回のキリンチャレンジカップは日本にとって2006年ワールドカップ本大会メンバーの最終選考という色合いが強い。よって当落線上にいるFW陣の働きに注目が集まった。期待に応えたのはジェフ千葉に所属するFW巻（25歳）。積極的なプレーでアピールし、交代間際にはゴールも奪った。一方、残念だったのはジュビロ磐田に所属する左MF村井（26歳）の負傷だろう。近年の日本では希少な存在である典型的なサイドアタッカーだった村井は、この怪我により本大会行きは絶望になったといわれている。
