【概要】
アジア5位決定プレーオフ第1戦、ウズベキスタン対バーレーン、異例の誤審認定で幕を閉じたアジア予選だが、最終的にはほぼ予想通りの勝ち抜けであったといえるだろう。“ほぼ”としたのは、コリア・ジャパンでW杯初出場を飾り、ファンやプレー人口も増え、また、2008年に北京五輪開催を控えていることからも躍進が期待されていた中国の敗退があったから。今回の中国の一次予選における脱落は、日本や韓国にとっても良い教訓となるだろう。
簡単にいうとアジア地区では、一次予選で4チーム×8グループに分かれ総当りのリーグ戦をし、その各1位チーム8つが、今度は二次予選で4チーム×2グループに分かれ総当りのリーグ戦を再び行う。
二次予選のグループ上位2チームずつ、合計4チームがワールドカップ出場権を獲得し、3位のチーム同士がアジア・プレーオフで戦い、勝ったチームはアジア5位として大陸間プレーオフへ進出するという流れだ。
もちろん、試合の平均レベルとしては勝ち上がってきた国同士が対戦する二次予選のほうが高いと考えられるが、失敗が許されないという意味では一次予選のほうも同様かそれ以上の厳しさを含んでいる。実際、今予選の一次で姿を消すことになった中国も、6試合を戦って5勝1敗の勝ち点15で敗退となった。
中国をかわして二次へ進出したクウェートは5勝1敗の勝ち点15、直接対決も1-0、0-1と互角、得失点差も＋13で同じ。彼らを分けたのは総得点の差、わずか1点であったのだ。（クウェート15得点、中国14得点）
一次予選は中国の組以外に7グループあるが、そのうち4グループは勝ち点15以内で勝ち抜けが決まっている。北朝鮮は勝ち点11で突破するなど、中国に同情すべき不運があるともいえるだろう。
もっとも日本とサウジアラビアだけは6戦全勝、勝ち点18を挙げて一次予選を通過し、その2チームが二次でも最終的にそれぞれのグループの首位にいることから、アジアでは一次予選の一試合たりとも気を抜かずに勝ち続けることのできるチームがワールドカップに行けるのだ、とも考えられる。
フランスのラ・ロシュフコーが残した名言に「他人のふり見て我がふり直せ」という有名なものがあるが、今回の中国は、これからアジアを代表する強豪としての地位を築こうとしている日本にとって、一次予選に潜む落とし穴を教える大切な鏡となったといえるのではなかろうか。
